What Happens After Your Pet Is Surrendered?

At our shelters, all animals receive necessary veterinary care, nutritious food, exercise and plenty of love and attention from our experienced staff and volunteers. Animals determined to be suitable for adoption are placed in our adoption program. There is no set time limit for how long an animal can remain in our adoption program so long as the animal maintains general good health and a sound temperament. Some are adopted out quickly. Some remain with us for months. We also work with a range of mid-coast rescue groups that can take our animals when we face space limitations or special needs. These “Placement Partners” greatly expand our reach and our ability to find forever homes for the pets who come to us.

Animals who are underage, recovering from illness or surgery, or who would benefit from a quiet, home environment are usually transferred to foster care and returned to the adoption program at a later time. We work hard to give a second chance to every potentially adoptable animal.

Animals who are not candidates for adoption due to terminal illness, severe medical or acute behavioral problems may be humanely euthanized.
