Adoption Overview

Adoption for us is a cooperative labor of love with the people who choose to look for a new family member at our Shelter. We appreciate and applaud those who make the life-saving decision to adopt a homeless animal!

Where do our adoptable animals come from?

Some animals are surrendered to us from families or individuals who can no longer care for them. Current economic challenges have forced many caring individuals to make heart-wrenching decisions about giving up a beloved pet.

Some of our animals are picked up off the streets as strays. After a holding period to allow time for a possible reclaim by their owners, the strays are evaluated.  Most immediately become adoption candidates, but some need medical care or behavioral training before becoming candidates for adoption.

Some of our animals are rescued from neglectful or abusive situations, or from homes with unsafe or unhealthy conditions.  Some are turned over to us when their owner dies and no friends or family members are available to take care of them

We work hard to place animals into “forever” homes, and we’ve got great options if you’re ready to make the life-saving decision to adopt!

Why adopt from us?

Shelter animals make great pets. Many have already lived with a human family and have the basic training, socialization and cooperative skills they need to become part of your household.

Many of our animals have the advantage of being mixed-breed, with what geneticists call “hybrid vigor,” thereby avoiding some of the health issues of purebred animals.

Our animals are also a bargain since their fees include spaying or neutering, a microchip, worming, vaccinations, and a certificate for a free health exam.

Come visit our adoptable animals, be prepared to fall in love, and thank you for making the life-saving decision to adopt a homeless animal!

Can I return an adopted animal to Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter if it doesn’t work out?

Yes. Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is an open-admission shelter and never turns away an animal.
